Do laws on the books influence our behavior? Do we not kill another person because it is illegal to kill them? Do we not commit armed robbery because there are laws against it? Do we avoid human trafficking because it is unlawful?
For the vast majority of people, a law on the books is not necessarily what prevents us from illegal conduct. Most of us do not want to harm others because it is simply wrong. We know this in our hearts. Killing, stealing, and harming our neighbor are inconceivable actions for most people and most Christians. Our hearts would not cooperate with such actions.
Therefore, if our hearts will not allow us to hurt others, a law on the books is not what keeps us from committing crimes against another. The same can be said about abortion. If in our heart we know that a human life exists in the womb, we could not hurt that life any more than we could commit armed robbery. Our heart would never allow it.
We are Catholic. We are called to help change hearts. It shouldn’t matter whether or not abortion is legal, or same-sex “marriage” is lawful. Our actions must always be aligned with the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Let’s work on changing the hearts of others so that all may live a life pleasing to the heart of God.
Ponder: What other secular issues are legal but are in opposition to Church teachings?
Reflect: Jeremiah 1:4-8
Pray: Heavenly Father, teach me to always follow your ways and not the ways of man.
