Have you observed the current phenomena of social behavior I will define as Electronic Dependence Syndrome or EDS for short? Many people suffer from this malady to varying degrees. Common symptoms include the need to have your cell phone on or in front of you at all times, the constant anticipation of a text message from anyone, and the preoccupation with posting photos on Facebook or Instagram. In addition, most people with EDS are addicted to electronic games and Internet surfing.

Simply walking around town, sipping coffee at your local coffee shop, or waiting for your plane to take off, you will notice many people looking down at their cell phones, engaging with their tablets or computers, and rarely aware of the people around them. EDS may even be considered an epidemic.

Is there a cure for EDS? Thankfully, there is an antidote to this syndrome. It’s called Jesus Dependence Treatment, or JDT. Imagine for a moment if we were as dependent on Jesus as we are on our electronic devices. We would all, most certainly, be saints! The JDT treatment plan includes praying without ceasing and trusting in the Lord in all that we do.

We are Catholic. Our cure for EDS is JDT. We are called to live a prayerful life. The daily rosary is a great start. We must rely less and less on our worldly devices and more and more on Jesus, Our Lord and Savior. Turn off the world and turn on to Jesus.

Ponder: How often do you allow your electronic devices distract you from Jesus each day?

Reflect: Proverbs 3:5-6

Pray: Dear Lord, teach me to turn to you always and become less connected with the things of this world.
